Taiwan Weighted Index Closes Down 0.83% on Broad Sector Losses

Taiwan's benchmark stock index closed lower on Friday, reversing earlier momentum as broad-based selling pressure emerged across several key sectors. The Taiwan Weighted Index (TAIEX) finished the session down 0.83%, according to data from Investing.com.
Sector Weakness Drives Decline
The day's negative performance was attributed to widespread losses across the market. The biotechnology, medical care, and plastics industries were among the sectors that led the downturn, signaling a risk-off sentiment among investors during the session.
Individual Stock Movers
Several individual companies experienced significant declines, weighing on the broader index. The session's worst performers included:
- Hong Ho Precision Textile Co Ltd (1446): Tumbled 12.79%.
- Yeong Guan Energy Technology Group Co Ltd (1589): Fell 9.92% to reach an all-time low.
- Hanpin Electron Co Ltd (2488): Declined 9.87%.
AdIn contrast, a few stocks bucked the negative trend. Taiflex Scientific Co Ltd (8039), Plotech Co Ltd (6141), and Logah Technology Corp (3593) each posted gains of 10.00%.
Currency and Commodity Markets
In foreign exchange markets, the New Taiwan dollar showed strength against its U.S. counterpart, with the USD/TWD pair falling 0.25% to 32.09. The U.S. Dollar Index Futures, which measures the greenback against a basket of major currencies, ticked down 0.13%.
Global commodity markets were relatively stable. Brent crude oil for September delivery rose 0.13% to $76.40 a barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude for August delivery was up 0.07% at $72.13 a barrel.
