Synopsys Secures Over $1B IP Licensing Deal with Amazon Web Services

Summary
Synopsys will provide custom silicon intellectual property to AWS in a multi-year deal valued at over $1 billion, supporting Amazon's in-house chip development and marking a strategic business model shift for the design software firm.
Synopsys Inc. (NASDAQ:SNPS) has entered into a multi-year agreement with Amazon Web Services (AWS) valued at more than $1 billion to license its silicon intellectual property (IP). The announcement sent Synopsys shares up over 3% in Wednesday trading.
Details of the Agreement
Under the terms of the deal, AWS will license Synopsys's application-optimized IP blueprints to advance its development of custom in-house processors. This positions Amazon.com Inc.'s (NASDAQ:AMZN) cloud division as the lead customer for Synopsys's expanded custom design offerings.
The partnership is set to support AWS's key silicon projects, including its Graviton central processing units (CPUs) and Trainium artificial intelligence (AI) accelerators. The agreement also includes the integration of Synopsys’s simulation, analysis, and agentic AI software into AWS's engineering workflows, according to the announcement.
Strategic Implications
This collaboration marks a significant expansion for Synopsys, a leader in electronic design automation (EDA) software. The company is moving beyond its traditional focus on licensing standard chip components into more complex, custom designs tailored for specific cloud workloads. The company's IP licensing business generated $1.75 billion in revenue in its most recent fiscal year.
AdAs part of the agreement, Synopsys will transition its silicon IP unit toward a license-plus-royalty economic model. This change ties the company's future financial returns directly to the production volumes and usage of its customers' chips, creating a potentially more scalable revenue stream.
A Reciprocal Partnership
The deal also establishes a deeper technological integration between the two companies. In turn for providing its IP, Synopsys will adopt AWS cloud compute and storage services to accelerate its own tool development.
Furthermore, Synopsys plans to use Amazon Bedrock, AWS's generative AI service, to build and deploy its own internal AI applications. This reciprocal arrangement underscores the strategic importance of the partnership beyond a standard supplier-customer relationship.
