Background

Shares in Symrise AG (SY1G) plunged nearly 10% on Wednesday after the German fragrance and flavor producer lowered its full-year profit margin guidance, sparking investor concern about profitability despite reporting better-than-expected quarterly revenue.

Margin Warning Overshadows Revenue Beat

In a third-quarter interim update, Symrise reported organic revenue growth of 5.3%, reaching €1.31 billion. This figure surpassed the analyst consensus estimate of approximately €1.28 billion for the period.

However, the positive top-line result was immediately eclipsed by a downward revision to the company's profitability outlook. Symrise announced it now expects its full-year adjusted EBITDA margin to land in the lower half of its previously stated target range of 21.5% to 22.5%. Management also noted that fourth-quarter growth is likely to moderate due to a more challenging year-over-year comparison.

Market Reaction

Investors interpreted the revised guidance as a significant profitability warning, triggering a sharp sell-off. The stock fell 9.8% to trade at €90.30, dropping below its 100-day moving average in early trading. The session low was recorded at €89.88.

The severe market reaction was amplified by the stock's recent performance. Having traded near its 52-week high of €102.85 prior to the announcement, the shares were priced for strong execution, making them vulnerable to any disappointment. The combination of a revenue beat with a weaker margin forecast created a classic "sell the news" scenario, prompting investors to lock in recent gains.
