Background

Shares of Summit Therapeutics (NASDAQ: SMMT) jumped 5.8% in pre-market trading on Wednesday after analysts at Jefferies upgraded the stock, citing growing optimism over upcoming clinical trial results for the company's lead drug candidate.

Upgrade Details and Price Target

Jefferies raised its rating on Summit Therapeutics to 'Buy' from a previous 'Hold' designation. The investment bank also significantly increased its price target on the stock to $25 from $15.

The upgrade comes ahead of a key data release anticipated by the end of 2026, which the firm views as a major potential catalyst for the biopharmaceutical company's valuation.

Confidence in Ivonescimab Data

In a note to clients, Jefferies analyst Faisal Khurshid expressed confidence that the upcoming progression-free survival (PFS) data from the H3 trial is "highly likely to be statistically significant." The analyst's conviction is based on an analysis of the trial's statistical plan and a comparison between data from China and the global study.

Jefferies projects a hazard ratio (HR) for PFS in the range of 0.65 to 0.70, a result that would be considered successful. The firm believes such an outcome would also signal a high probability of positive overall survival (OS) data, which is expected in the first half of 2027.

Broader Trial Success

Khurshid noted that Jefferies holds "strong conviction" in the drug's mechanism of action, bolstered by previously announced positive overall survival results from the H6, H2, and H-GI1 trials.

The firm believes that ivonescimab's potential as a first-in-class treatment will continue to be a primary driver of its value. Summit Therapeutics focuses on developing innovative medicines for patients with unmet medical needs.
