Sumitomo Electric Stock Jumps on Petabit-Scale Submarine Cable Deal with Meta, NEC

Summary
Shares of the Japanese industrial giant surged after it announced a collaboration to build a new transatlantic fiber optic cable, leveraging its advanced two-core fiber technology to meet rising AI-driven data demand.
Shares of Sumitomo Electric Industries (TSE:5802) surged 6.7% to ¥2,220.5 on Thursday following the company's announcement of a major collaboration with Meta Platforms and NEC Corporation. The partnership aims to construct the world's first commercial petabit-class optical submarine cable system, dubbed "Petal."
A Transatlantic Data Superhighway
The three companies will build a new transatlantic cable spanning approximately 7,000 kilometers between the United States and France, according to a September 22 statement. The project is designed to address the rapidly growing global demand for high-capacity connectivity, fueled by artificial intelligence and other data-intensive applications.
Under the agreement, Sumitomo Electric will supply its proprietary optical fiber, while NEC will lead the system's design and construction. Meta Platforms is set to finance and operate the cable, which is scheduled to enter service in 2029.
Advanced Technology and Market Position
The Petal system will utilize Sumitomo Electric’s advanced two-core optical fiber, which creates two independent transmission paths within a single glass strand. This technology allows for a significant increase in data capacity.
Key features of the project include:
Ad- 48 pairs of spatial channels, a high-density configuration for subsea cables.
- A target transmission capacity that doubles that of Anjana, a previous 24 fiber-pair system built by the same three partners.
This repeat collaboration underscores Sumitomo Electric's established role as a key supplier for cutting-edge submarine infrastructure projects. The company's technology is central to achieving the petabit-scale capacity required for future internet traffic.
Market Reaction and Outlook
The stock's sharp rise on Thursday also occurred amid a broader rally in Japanese technology stocks, with the Nikkei 225 index gaining nearly 2%. Prior to the announcement, analyst consensus on Sumitomo Electric was a firm "Buy," according to market data.
The average 12-month price target from analysts stood at ¥3,531, suggesting a potential upside of approximately 59% from Thursday's trading levels. This existing positive sentiment provided a strong foundation for the market's favorable reaction to the new project.
