Sterling Trades Sideways as Dollar Holds Firm Ahead of Fed Minutes

The British pound traded nearly flat against a resilient U.S. dollar on Monday, with investors largely focused on the upcoming release of Federal Reserve meeting minutes. As of 08:25 ET, the GBP/USD pair was down a marginal 0.03% to trade at $1.3348.
Dollar Shrugs Off Weak Data
The U.S. dollar found support from interest rate expectations rather than recent economic figures. Last week's soft non-farm payrolls report for June failed to dent the greenback, as money markets continue to price in approximately 31 basis points of Federal Reserve tightening this year, according to Investing.com.
Analysts suggest that the underlying narrative favors a stronger dollar. "Short dollar positions need to be backed up by a strong story, which is simply not there at the moment," said Chris Turner, global head of markets at ING. He added that the Fed "is committed to restoring price stability."
Sterling's Outlook Clouded by Politics
Sterling's current stability is not being driven by domestic fundamentals. The currency is trading near a two-week high, partly supported by the unwinding of old short positions. However, analysts see potential future headwinds from the UK's political landscape.
AdAn incoming administration led by Prime Minister Andy Burnham is expected on July 20. ING noted that the frontrunner for Chancellor, Ed Miliband, faces significant fiscal constraints, which could make tax increases likely. This political backdrop, combined with ING's expectation that the Bank of England will not raise rates this year, could leave the pound vulnerable to giving back its recent gains.
Market Focus on Central Banks
The key event for currency markets this week is the release of the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) minutes on Wednesday, which are widely expected to carry a hawkish tone. In the immediate term, traders are watching Monday's June ISM services data for fresh signals on inflation.
Elsewhere, the euro fell more sharply against the dollar, with the EUR/USD pair down 0.17% to $1.1417. Markets are pricing in less than a 50% probability of a rate hike from the European Central Bank in September.
