Background

The British pound eased against the U.S. dollar on Wednesday, as rising oil prices fueled by geopolitical tensions and investor positioning ahead of potentially hawkish Federal Reserve minutes bolstered safe-haven demand for the greenback.

Dollar Strengthens on Geopolitical Risk

The dollar saw broad-based gains, weighing on other major currencies. Key currency movements as of 10:15 GMT included:

  • GBP/USD: The pound fell 0.07% to trade at $1.3343.
  • EUR/USD: The euro slipped 0.08% to $1.1403.

This move into the dollar was driven by its appeal as a safe-haven asset after fresh U.S. strikes on Iran contributed to market jitters. The tensions sent Brent crude oil prices surging nearly 6% to around $79 a barrel, further supporting the U.S. currency.

Investors are closely watching for the release of minutes from the Federal Reserve's June meeting later today. The market expects the details to confirm the central bank's hawkish stance, which could provide further momentum for the dollar.

"The importance of the Fed’s hawkish shift in June for the dollar cannot be overstated," said Francesco Pesole, an FX strategist at ING. According to ING, while futures markets are only pricing in 35 basis points of rate cuts by December, the minutes are likely to cement the Fed's firm message. Pesole sees a potential upside risk for the dollar index to the 101.50-102.0 range in the near term.

Broader Market Context

While the dollar's strength is the dominant theme, sterling has recently been supported by rising expectations for a Bank of England rate hike. Markets are now fully pricing in a 25-basis-point hike by the end of the year, according to the source material. In the eurozone, the market showed a muted reaction to Marine Le Pen’s confirmation that she will run in France’s 2027 presidential election.
