S&P/TSX Composite Hits Record High, Boosted by Materials and Energy Stocks

Canada's main stock index advanced on Wednesday to close at a new all-time high, driven by a broad rally in commodity-linked sectors. The S&P/TSX Composite gained 0.33% by the close of trade in Toronto, according to data from Investing.com.
Market Performance
The record close reflected positive investor sentiment, with advancing stocks outnumbering decliners on the Toronto Stock Exchange by a margin of 579 to 394, while 84 issues ended the session unchanged.
Further signaling a calmer market outlook, the S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of options on the index, fell 1.77% to 13.88. A lower VIX reading generally indicates reduced investor anxiety about near-term market direction.
Sector and Stock Movers
Gains were led by strong performance in the Materials, Energy, and Utilities sectors. The rally in resource-based industries coincided with a notable uptick in global commodity prices, particularly for precious metals and crude oil.
Several mining companies were among the top individual performers on the index:
Ad- Montage Gold Corp (TSX:MAU) surged 10.40%.
- NovaGold Resources Inc (TSX:NG) climbed 10.08%.
- Southern Cross Gold Consolidated Ltd (TSX:SXGC) gained 9.41%.
Notable decliners included Bird Construction Inc. (TSX:BDT), which fell 6.71%, Lightspeed Commerce Inc (TSX:LSPD), which dropped 4.92%, and Rogers Communications Inc (TSX:RCIb), down 4.63%.
Commodities and Currencies
The energy sector's advance was underpinned by a rise in oil prices. Crude oil for September delivery increased 2.44% to $86.40 a barrel, while the international benchmark Brent oil contract for September rose 3.01% to $93.75 a barrel.
Precious metals also saw gains, with August Gold Futures contracts rising 1.58%. In currency markets, the US Dollar Index Futures edged down 0.06%, while the Canadian dollar was relatively stable against its US counterpart.
