Market sentiment was broadly negative on the Toronto Stock Exchange, where declining stocks outnumbered advancing ones 571 to 399, with 77 issues ending unchanged. Reflecting the market's uncertainty, the S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures implied volatility, rose by 3.88% to 14.98.

Despite the overall market downturn, some companies posted strong gains. Methanex Corporation (TSX:MX) was among the top performers, rising 6.21% to close at 69.26. Enerflex Ltd. (TSX:EFX) added 5.71% to end the day at 34.63, and Headwater Exploration Inc. (TSX:HWX) increased by 5.64% to 12.36.

On the other end of the spectrum, mining stocks were among the session's biggest losers. Aris Mining Corp (TSX:ARIS) fell 8.06% to trade at 19.84. Eldorado Gold Corp (TSX:ELD) declined by 7.31% to 42.09, and Seabridge Gold Inc. (TSX:SEA) was down 6.16%, closing at 35.35.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery saw a decrease of 1.66%, settling at $4,088.37 a troy ounce. In contrast, energy markets rallied, with Crude oil for August delivery surging 5.98% to $74.65 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract climbed 6.72% to $79.14 a barrel.
