S&P/ASX 200 Gains 0.79%, Lifted by Technology and Resources Stocks

Summary
Australia's benchmark stock index closed higher on Friday, driven by a strong rally in the technology sector, even as the number of declining stocks outpaced advancers. The S&P/ASX 200 gained 0.79%, with notable performances from IT and resources companies.
Australian shares finished the trading session higher on Friday, with the benchmark S&P/ASX 200 index climbing 0.79%. The advance was primarily led by strong performance in the information technology, energy, and resources sectors, according to market data at the close in Sydney.
Sector Movers and Market Breadth
The technology sector was a clear standout. Megaport Ltd (ASX:MP1) surged 10.02% to reach an all-time high. Other top performers on the index included:
- Life360 Inc (ASX:360), which added 7.56%.
- Wisetech Global Ltd (ASX:WTC), which closed up 6.40%.
On the downside, healthcare firm Cochlear Ltd (ASX:COH) was among the session's worst performers, falling 3.92%. It was joined by LendLease Group (ASX:LLC), which declined 3.86%, and Graincorp Ltd Class A (ASX:GNC), which was down 2.86%.
Despite the headline index gain, overall market breadth was negative. Data from the Sydney Stock Exchange showed 530 falling stocks outnumbered 509 advancing ones, with 387 positions ending unchanged. This suggests the day's gains were concentrated in a smaller number of influential companies.
AdVolatility and Commodity Markets
Investor sentiment appeared to improve, as reflected by the S&P/ASX 200 VIX, a key measure of implied market volatility. The index fell 3.92% to 11.27, suggesting lower expectations of near-term market turbulence.
In commodity markets, energy prices retreated. Crude oil for November delivery fell 0.79% to $92.14 a barrel, while the December Brent oil contract slipped 0.63% to $101.67 a barrel. In contrast, Gold Futures for December delivery edged higher.
Currency markets were relatively stable, with the AUD/USD pair largely unchanged at 0.69. Meanwhile, the US Dollar Index Futures, which tracks the greenback against a basket of major currencies, declined 0.23%.
