Background

Spain's benchmark stock index, the IBEX 35, finished Monday's trading session with a solid gain, rising 1.08% as investor optimism in several key sectors offset weakness in energy shares. The advance was supported by broad market participation, according to closing data from Madrid.

Session Highlights

The rally was led by strong performance in the Consumer Services, Financial Services & Real Estate, and Building & Construction sectors. Market breadth was positive, with 134 stocks on the Madrid Stock Exchange advancing compared to 50 decliners, while 22 issues ended the session unchanged.

Among the top performers on the IBEX 35 were:

  • Cellnex Telecom SA (BME:CLNX), which rose 2.84% to trade at 25.71.
  • International Consolidated Airlines Group S.A. (BME:ICAG), which added 2.67% to end at 5.03.
  • Acciona (BME:ANA), which was up 2.59% to close at 213.60.

Energy Stocks Lag Amid Commodity Sell-Off

In contrast, energy-related companies faced downward pressure, tracking a sharp fall in global commodity prices. The session's most notable laggards included oil and gas firm Repsol (BME:REP), which fell 1.25%, and Naturgy Energy Group SA (BME:NTGY), which declined 1.08%.

The weakness in these stocks mirrored a significant downturn in the oil markets. Crude oil for November delivery plunged 4.48% to $91.78 a barrel, while the November Brent oil contract fell 4.14% to trade at $99.57 a barrel. Elsewhere, Gold Futures for December delivery were down 0.75%, while the US Dollar Index Futures edged up 0.18%.
