SpaceX Weighting in Nasdaq 100 to More Than Double to 2.82% in Rebalance

Summary
The aerospace company's weighting in the tech-heavy index will jump from 1.28% to 2.82% in a quarterly adjustment, a move that will force passive funds and ETFs to purchase billions of dollars in stock.
SpaceX's weighting in the Nasdaq 100 Index is set to more than double in the benchmark's upcoming quarterly rebalance, a significant adjustment that will compel passive investment funds to purchase billions of dollars worth of the company's stock to align their portfolios.
Rebalance Details
The aerospace and satellite giant's influence in the index will jump to 2.82% from its current 1.28%, according to a Bloomberg report citing data from the index provider. The adjustment, which was calculated based on Friday's closing prices, is scheduled to take effect on Monday.
This rebalance will more closely align the company's influence in the widely-tracked index with its massive market valuation following its public debut in July.
Billions in Forced Buying Expected
The substantial increase in index weighting will trigger mechanical buying from the vast ecosystem of funds that track the Nasdaq 100. Portfolio managers of these passive funds and exchange-traded funds (ETFs) must now acquire more SpaceX shares to ensure their holdings accurately reflect the index's new composition.
AdKey funds impacted by this rebalance include:
- The Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ), one of the world's largest ETFs with $482 billion in assets under management.
- A global network of over 200 investment products that track the Nasdaq 100, managing more than $800 billion in total assets.
Correcting an Index Disparity
The rebalance addresses a notable discrepancy between SpaceX's market value and its previous index representation. Despite ranking as the seventh-largest company in the Nasdaq 100 with a market capitalization exceeding $2 trillion, its initial 1.28% weighting did not place it among the top 20 constituents.
This disparity was largely due to a significant portion of its shares being locked up following its listing, which constrained its free-float and, consequently, its initial index weight.
