S&P Dow Jones Indices Partners With Kalshi on Event Contracts and Prediction Data

S&P Dow Jones Indices has entered into a strategic partnership with prediction market platform Kalshi, allowing the firm's event contracts to be based on S&P's benchmarks while S&P will leverage Kalshi's data to develop new indexes. The preferred-provider agreement, announced Monday, marks a significant move by the established index provider into the growing prediction market space.
Details of the Agreement
The collaboration is a two-way arrangement that integrates the core businesses of both firms. Key aspects of the partnership include:
- Benchmark Integration: Kalshi will be able to list event contracts that settle against the official index values published by S&P Dow Jones Indices (S&P DJI). This provides a standardized and widely recognized settlement mechanism for Kalshi's products.
- New Index Creation: S&P DJI will gain access to Kalshi’s prediction data to construct a new series of indexes. These will track the likelihood of outcomes in areas such as economics, politics, and sporting events, representing S&P DJI's first venture into using prediction market data.
Strategic Implications
For Kalshi, the alliance offers a significant boost in legitimacy and may help it attract a broader base of retail and institutional users. The platform has previously faced criticism for resembling a gambling service, and aligning with a globally trusted name in financial benchmarks provides a "trust cushion," according to the announcement.
Ad"S&P DJI is the gold standard for benchmarks. Bringing that standard to Kalshi is an important step toward accelerating retail and institutional demand," said Kalshi CEO Tarek Mansour in a statement.
For S&P DJI, the move represents a strategic expansion into a rapidly emerging asset class. "Our collaboration extends S&P DJI’s role as the world’s leading benchmark provider into one of the fastest-growing categories in financial markets," stated Cathy Clay, CEO of S&P Dow Jones Indices.
Context on Prediction Markets
Prediction markets, operated by platforms such as Kalshi and Polymarket, have gained prominence by enabling users to trade contracts based on the outcomes of future events. These markets allow participants to wager on a wide array of possibilities, from election results and economic data releases to military operations, creating a new source of real-time probability data.
