S&P 500 to Add Pinterest, Bloom Energy in Quarterly Rebalance

Summary
S&P Dow Jones Indices announced its quarterly rebalancing, which will see Pinterest and Bloom Energy join the benchmark S&P 500 index, effective before the market opens on Sept. 21, 2026.
S&P Dow Jones Indices has announced changes to its benchmark U.S. equity indexes as part of its quarterly rebalancing, with Pinterest (P) and Bloom Energy (BE) set to join the S&P 500. The adjustments will take effect prior to the opening of trading on Monday, September 21, 2026.
Key Index Adjustments
The rebalancing will affect several of the most widely followed U.S. stock market benchmarks. The goal of these periodic adjustments is to ensure each index remains an accurate representation of its respective market capitalization segment.
Key changes announced include:
- S&P 500: Pinterest Inc. (P) and Bloom Energy Corp. (BE) will be added to the large-cap index.
- Other Indices: Adjustments will also be made to the S&P 100, S&P MidCap 400, and S&P SmallCap 600 indices.
AdS&P Dow Jones Indices noted that companies being removed from the S&P SmallCap 600 are no longer representative of the small-cap market space.
Market Implications
Inclusion in the S&P 500 is a significant event for a company, as it typically triggers substantial demand for its shares. Index-tracking funds, such as ETFs and mutual funds that benchmark against the S&P 500, will be required to purchase the stocks of the newly added companies to align their portfolios with the index's updated composition.
This forced buying can lead to increased trading volume and upward price pressure on the incoming stocks in the days leading up to the effective date. Conversely, companies that are removed from an index often face selling pressure as these same funds liquidate their positions.
