U.S. equity markets advanced on Friday, with the S&P 500 ending the session just shy of a record high as investors drew optimism from a blockbuster market debut and turned their focus to the upcoming corporate earnings season.

SK Hynix IPO Boosts Chip Sector

A surge of enthusiasm for the artificial intelligence trade returned to markets following the successful U.S. listing of South Korea’s SK Hynix. The memory-chip manufacturer raised over $26 billion by selling American Depositary Receipts (ADRs) at $149 each. The stock ended its first day of trading at $170, a gain of 13%.

The strong debut bolstered the semiconductor sector, with the PHLX chip index gaining 0.06% for its third consecutive day of advances. Chipmakers have been a primary driver of this year's market rally, though concerns over high valuations have recently introduced volatility.

Focus Shifts to Q2 Earnings

Investor attention is now shifting to the second-quarter earnings season, which begins next week with reports from major U.S. banks. According to data from LSEG I/B/E/S, analysts expect S&P 500 earnings to have grown by a robust 24% compared to the same period a year ago, with technology firms anticipated to be major contributors.

"This is a high-bar quarter with a narrow margin of error," said Terry Sandven, chief equity strategist at U.S. Bank Wealth Management, in a comment to Reuters. Sandven added that bank results will provide a crucial "read on the underlying economic strength and what consumers and businesses are doing."

The S&P 500 climbed 0.42% to close at 7,575.39 points, while the Nasdaq Composite and the Dow Jones Industrial Average both gained 0.29%. For the week, the S&P 500 and Nasdaq posted gains of 1.2% and 1.7%, respectively, while the Dow slipped 0.5%.

Among individual stocks, Meta Platforms jumped nearly 6%, while Moderna Inc. tumbled almost 11%. Looking ahead, investors will be watching for June inflation data and testimony from Federal Reserve officials next week for further indications on the path of monetary policy. Trading volume on Friday was relatively light at 14.5 billion shares, below the 20-session average of 22.4 billion.
