South African Rand Holds Steady as Traders Await Fed Minutes for Rate Cues

The South African rand held steady against the U.S. dollar on Monday, with currency traders awaiting the release of Federal Reserve meeting minutes later this week for fresh insights into the central bank's interest rate path.
According to data from Investing.com, the rand was trading at 16.2450 per dollar around 1411 GMT, nearly unchanged from its previous close.
Market Focus on Fed Policy
Investors are closely watching for signals from the U.S. Federal Reserve, as its monetary policy decisions heavily influence global risk appetite. Recent commentary has been mixed, with Fed Chair Kevin Warsh reportedly stating last week that those expecting an easing of its inflation stance could be "disappointed," while also acknowledging that inflation had recently cooled.
Amid the cautious sentiment, the U.S. dollar index, which measures the greenback against a basket of currencies, traded 0.2% higher. A stronger dollar typically exerts pressure on emerging market currencies like the rand.
AdGlobal Drivers and Domestic Outlook
With a light domestic economic calendar, the rand's movements are primarily dictated by global factors. As a risk-sensitive currency, its value is often tied to U.S. economic data and policy developments.
Traders will be monitoring a few local data points this week. South Africa is scheduled to release its June foreign reserves data on Tuesday, followed by May manufacturing output figures on Thursday.
