South African Rand Firms as Gold Rally Offsets Weak Manufacturing Data

Background

The South African rand strengthened against the U.S. dollar on Thursday, as a rally in the price of gold, a key national export, provided enough support to outweigh the release of weak domestic manufacturing data.

Currency and Commodity Moves

By 1524 GMT, the rand traded at 16.32 against the dollar, marking a gain of approximately 0.6% from its previous close, according to Investing.com data. The currency's advance was primarily linked to a more than 1% increase in the price of gold.

As a major global producer of the precious metal, the rand is a commodity-linked currency that often tracks movements in the gold market. The rand's gains were further supported by a modest retreat in the U.S. dollar, which declined 0.1% against a basket of currencies.

The rand's appreciation occurred despite a report from South Africa's national statistics agency that pointed to significant weakness in the industrial sector. Manufacturing output fell by 4.3% year-on-year in May.

This marked a sharp acceleration from the 2.9% year-on-year decline recorded in April, signaling persistent challenges for the domestic economy that investors looked past for the day.

Broader Market Reaction

Sentiment on the local equity market was positive, with the Johannesburg Stock Exchange's Top-40 index closing 1.1% higher. The gains were partly driven by mining stocks, which benefited directly from the stronger commodity price environment.
