Smithfield Foods Projects Q3 Operating Loss in Fresh Pork Business Amid Market Pressure

Smithfield Foods said Tuesday it now expects its fresh pork business to report an adjusted operating loss in the third quarter, a sharp reversal from the profit posted a year ago. The U.S. pork processor attributed the revised outlook to sustained pressure from lower hog prices and cautious consumer spending, which are squeezing industry margins.
A Worsening Outlook
The company projects a third-quarter adjusted operating loss for its fresh pork segment, its second-largest revenue generator, in the range of $70 million to $90 million. This compares to an adjusted operating profit of $10 million in the same period last year.
Smithfield stated that falling USDA pork cutout and hog prices have compressed margins across the industry, leading to a more "conservative view of segment profitability." CEO Shane Smith said the change was "driven by external market conditions within portions of the pork value chain."
Impact Across Segments
The headwinds are also affecting other parts of the company's operations. Smithfield provided updated guidance for several business units:
Ad- Hog Production: Q3 adjusted operating profit is now forecast between $25 million and $45 million, down significantly from $89 million a year earlier.
- Total Company: Total adjusted operating income for the quarter is expected to be $115 million to $175 million, compared with $310 million in the prior-year period.
- Packaged Meats: The forecast for its largest segment, packaged meats, was kept intact, with fiscal 2026 adjusted operating income expected between $1.08 billion and $1.15 billion.
Market Reaction and Context
Following the announcement, shares of Smithfield Foods (SFD) fell nearly 2% in extended trading. The revised guidance comes after the company cut its full-year sales and profit forecasts last month, signaling ongoing challenges from market dynamics and a difficult consumer environment.
Investors will be looking for more details when the company participates in the Barclays Global Consumer Conference on Thursday. The contrast between the struggling fresh pork and hog production segments and the stable packaged meats business highlights the volatility of commodity-exposed operations versus value-added consumer brands.
