SB Energy Earmarks Up to $500 Million in Shares for Japanese Investors in US IPO

Summary
The SoftBank-backed data center developer will allocate a significant portion of its upcoming U.S. public listing to Japanese investors, capitalizing on strong demand for AI-related offerings.
SB Energy, a data center developer backed by SoftBank Group, plans to sell up to $500 million in shares to Japanese investors as part of its forthcoming U.S. initial public offering, according to a company filing on Tuesday.
IPO Details and Use of Proceeds
The company will issue new shares specifically for this allocation. The capital raised will be used for general operating costs, primarily to fund the development of data centers, power generation, and related infrastructure projects, the filing stated.
While the filing detailed the portion for Japanese investors, it did not disclose the total size or target price range of the U.S. IPO. Previous reports from Reuters have indicated that SoftBank may seek a valuation of $50 billion for SB Energy.
High-Profile AI Backing
The offering is attracting significant interest from major technology firms. In an investment prospectus released earlier in September, SB Energy disclosed that chipmaker Nvidia has committed to invest $1.5 billion in a private placement at the IPO price.
AdAdditionally, the company has issued warrants to AI leader OpenAI worth approximately $5.5 billion. These commitments underscore the strategic importance of data center infrastructure in the expanding artificial intelligence sector.
Context: Strong Demand for AI Listings
SB Energy's public listing is part of a broader trend of AI-related firms tapping public markets amidst high investor enthusiasm. This follows the successful listing of SpaceX in June and comes as Anthropic prepares for its own IPO later this year.
Japanese investors have shown particularly strong appetite for these offerings. They secured $2.2 billion worth of shares in the SpaceX IPO, a figure that highlights the significant international demand for high-growth technology stocks.
