Samsung Launches Dedicated Robotics Division to Accelerate Growth

Summary
Samsung Electronics has established a new 'Robotics eXperience' (RX) division, reporting directly to the CEO, to spearhead its mid-to-long-term strategy in the sector. The move aims to establish robotics as a key future growth engine for the South Korean technology giant.
Samsung Electronics (KRX:005930) announced on Tuesday the formation of a new robotics division, a strategic move designed to establish the field as a future growth engine for the company. The new unit will report directly to the chief executive, underscoring its importance to the tech giant's long-term plans.
New Division to Drive Strategy
The company stated that the new division, named Robotics eXperience (RX), will be responsible for several key functions:
- Managing the company's mid-to-long-term robotics strategy.
- Overseeing core technology development and business operations.
- Expanding research capabilities both domestically and internationally.
Leading the new unit's Robotics Strategy Team will be Executive Vice President Lee Dongkun. According to Samsung, Lee previously managed robotics strategy at Hyundai Motor Group, where he also directed the well-known robotics firm Boston Dynamics, bringing significant industry expertise to the role.
Global Expansion and Technology Focus
AdThis initiative builds on previous statements from the company. During its January earnings call, Samsung said it aimed to achieve "tangible" results in its humanoid robotics business this year. The company noted that recent advances in technologies such as physical AI are making robotics a more commercially viable business.
To support these efforts, Samsung plans to open robotics research hubs in the United States, China, and Japan. The company said this will help strengthen its competitiveness by leveraging local ecosystems and expertise in regions where robotics technology is advancing rapidly.
From Manufacturing to Consumer Markets
Samsung's initial focus will be on developing humanoid robots to improve productivity and user experience within its own manufacturing sites. The company then plans to expand its robotics applications into the home and retail sectors.
In April, Samsung had indicated it would consider investments and acquisitions to accelerate development and commercialization in the robotics field. This new division centralizes those efforts, signaling a more aggressive push into the rapidly evolving industry.
