Saia Stock Jumps After BofA Upgrade to Buy on Positive Demand Signals
Text size
Background

Shares of Saia Inc. (NASDAQ:SAIA) rose 3.7% on Monday following an upgrade from BofA Securities, which raised its rating on the less-than-truckload (LTL) carrier to Buy from Neutral. The bank also nudged its price target for the stock to $502 from $499.

The Analyst's Thesis

BofA Securities analyst Ken Hoexter attributed the upgrade to "increasingly constructive demand signals" observed in the firm’s recent Truck Shipper Survey. In a note to clients, Hoexter also pointed to Saia's internal opportunities for improvements in service, productivity, and yield.

The analyst suggested that a recent pullback in the stock, which fell from a high of $488 in early June, presents an "attractive opportunity" for investors. BofA believes Saia is in the "early stages of monetizing its national network" and is poised for strong operating leverage.

Valuation and Market Position

The upgrade also highlighted Saia's valuation relative to its peers. According to BofA, the company's stock trades at a more attractive multiple than other top LTL carriers.

  • Saia trades at 29 times its estimated 2027 earnings per share.
  • This is nearly 6 turns below competitors Old Dominion Freight Line (35.0x) and XPO (34.0x).

Hoexter noted that Saia has approximately 20% to 25% excess capacity in its network. This positions the company to gain market share as the freight market enters a potential upcycle, particularly amid anecdotal reports of service and capacity constraints among private carriers.
