Russian Stocks Decline as Blue-Chip Weakness Belies Flat MOEX Index

Summary
Russia's MOEX Index closed unchanged, but the session saw broad-based declines with more stocks falling than rising, as major companies including Polyus and VTB hit multi-year and all-time lows.
The MOEX Russia Index finished the trading session flat, masking underlying weakness across the broader market. Despite the benchmark's 0.00% change, declining stocks significantly outnumbered advancers, and several blue-chip companies fell to historic lows, signaling negative investor sentiment.
Market Internals Show Negative Breadth
A closer look at the session's trading data reveals a bearish tone. On the Moscow Stock Exchange, 157 stocks fell while only 69 advanced, with 18 ending the day unchanged. This negative market breadth indicates that the headline index's stability was not reflective of the performance of most listed companies.
Adding to signs of investor unease, the Russian Volatility Index (RVI), which measures the implied volatility of MOEX options, closed at a six-month high of 46.01, according to Investing.com data.
Laggards Hit Historic Lows
Several prominent companies were among the day's worst performers, with some hitting significant milestones:
Ad- Polyus PJSC (PLZL): The gold miner's shares plunged 4.92% to a new 5-year low.
- AFK Sistema PJSC (AFKS): The conglomerate declined 1.84%, also hitting a 5-year low.
- Bank VTB PJSC (VTBR): The banking giant fell 0.96% to a record all-time low.
In contrast, a few firms bucked the trend. Moskovskiy Kreditnyi Bank (CBOM) was a top gainer, rising 2.35%, while oil producer Tatneft (TATN) added 0.56%.
Currency and Commodity Backdrop
The Russian ruble weakened against major currencies during the session. The USD/RUB pair rose 1.10% to 77.00, while the EUR/RUB pair gained 0.95% to 87.88.
In commodities, energy prices softened, with Crude oil futures for August delivery falling 0.93% and the September Brent contract down 0.38%. Gold futures also declined, losing 0.65%.
