Russia Detains Blogger, Fines Politician in Crackdown on War Critics

Russian authorities have detained a blogger and fined a politician, both outspoken critics of the war in Ukraine, in a move seen as a warning to dissenters ahead of September's parliamentary elections.

Blogger Ilya Remeslo was detained on Friday on suspicion of spreading false information about the Russian military, the state news agency TASS reported. Remeslo, a former pro-Kremlin figure, gained prominence after publishing a viral social media post in March titled "Five reasons why I stopped supporting Vladimir Putin." If convicted, he could face up to 10 years in prison.

Separately, Boris Nadezhdin, a politician who attempted an anti-war campaign for the 2024 presidential election, was fined a symbolic 1,000 roubles ($13) for displaying "extremist symbols." His lawyer stated the charge stemmed from a social media post that linked to a video containing a photo of the late opposition leader Alexei Navalny, whose organization is banned in Russia as an extremist group.

These actions come as the Kremlin and the ruling United Russia party face pressure from an economic slowdown and fuel shortages. The government maintains that strict censorship laws are necessary for national unity during what it terms an "existential confrontation with the West."

The crackdown extends beyond these two figures. The liberal Yabloko party, which also opposes the war, has seen several members disqualified from elections. Last month, its deputy chair, Maxim Kruglov, was convicted of spreading "military fakes" and sentenced to seven years in prison.
