Retail Funds See $25.3 Billion Inflow, Reversing Prior Week's Outflows, Jefferies Reports

Retail investment funds, excluding money markets, attracted $25.3 billion in net inflows for the week ended September 2, a sharp reversal from the outflows recorded in the prior week, according to a report from Jefferies. The data indicates a renewed, albeit selective, risk appetite among investors, with exchange-traded funds being the primary beneficiaries.
ETFs Drive Inflows as Mutual Funds See Redemptions
The headline figure was driven by a significant divergence between fund structures. Exchange-traded funds (ETFs) pulled in $33.4 billion, a substantial increase from the $17.4 billion they attracted the previous week. In contrast, mutual funds (excluding money markets) continued to see investor withdrawals, shedding $8.1 billion. However, this was an improvement from the $17.4 billion in outflows seen the week before.
Separately, money market funds, which are treated as cash equivalents, saw a massive influx of $37.8 billion, compared with just $2.6 billion in the prior period. This suggests that while some capital is moving back into risk assets, a strong demand for safety and yield persists.
AdDiverging Trends in Equity and Bond Markets
A closer look at asset classes reveals distinct investor preferences, particularly the ongoing shift from mutual funds to ETFs.
- U.S. Equities: U.S. equity ETFs saw a dramatic turnaround, posting inflows of $9.8 billion after experiencing outflows of $8.9 billion the week before. Meanwhile, U.S. equity mutual funds recorded outflows of $10.1 billion.
- International Equities: International equity ETFs marked their 73rd consecutive week of inflows, attracting $5.2 billion. Their mutual fund counterparts saw outflows accelerate to $3.2 billion.
- Taxable Bonds: The trend was similar in fixed income, where taxable bond ETFs extended their inflow streak to 74 straight weeks, bringing in $11.2 billion. Taxable bond mutual funds reversed the prior week's outflows, attracting $4.4 billion.
- Municipal Bonds: Both municipal bond mutual funds and ETFs continued to see positive, though moderated, inflows totaling a combined $1.2 billion.
