Repsol Stock Hits 52-Week High on Tripled Profits and New Buyback

Shares of Spanish energy company Repsol S.A. (REP) climbed to a new 52-week high on Tuesday after the company posted a significant increase in first-half profit and announced enhanced shareholder returns. The stock rose as much as 2.9% to an intraday high of €26.50 after the results were filed with Spain's National Securities Market Commission (CNMV).
Earnings Propel Stock Surge
Repsol reported a blockbuster set of earnings for the first six months of 2026, driven by higher crude oil prices and favorable inventory effects. The results significantly outpaced the prior-year period, challenging a recent cautious rating from analysts.
- Net Profit: Repsol posted a net profit of €2.201 billion for the January-June period, a sharp increase from the €603 million recorded in the first half of 2025.
- Adjusted Net Result: The adjusted result, which strips out certain one-off items to reflect underlying business performance, reached €2.711 billion.
- Inventory Effect: The profit was boosted by a positive inventory revaluation of €823 million, a stark reversal from a negative impact of €394 million in the same period last year.
Enhanced Shareholder Returns
AdAlongside the strong earnings, Repsol's board approved new measures to return capital to shareholders, signaling confidence in its financial health. The company also reported a significant reduction in its debt load.
The board authorized a new share buyback program of up to €500 million, adding to a €350 million program already completed. Repsol also increased its 2026 cash dividend to €1.051 per share, an approximate 8% increase from the previous year. The company's net debt fell by more than €1.1 billion compared to the end of the first quarter, supported by strong operating cash flow and proceeds from the sale of a renewable energy portfolio.
Market Context
The stock's rally was a company-specific event, outperforming a slightly negative broader market and not driven by a sector-wide trend. The strong operational performance and shareholder-friendly announcements directly countered a more cautious stance from Morgan Stanley, which had downgraded the stock to a hold-equivalent rating earlier in July. The scale of the earnings beat is likely to prompt a reassessment from the analyst community.
