Prediction Market Boom Creates Tiered Investment Opportunities in Public Stocks

Background

The growing popularity of prediction markets, which allow users to trade on the outcome of real-world events, has created a distinct hierarchy of investment opportunities for public-market participants. With the sector's most recognized platforms still privately held, investors are looking to the exchanges, brokers, and other companies that form the industry's ecosystem.

Tier 1: Core Infrastructure

The foundation of the prediction market boom is built on core financial infrastructure providers. These companies act as the essential "picks and shovels," profiting from increased trading volume regardless of which specific markets or platforms win.

  • CME Group (CME): As a dominant force in futures infrastructure, CME is a primary beneficiary. The company recently reported its third-highest quarterly average daily volume on record at 29.8 million contracts and saw market data revenue jump 20% to a record $238 million. Citing this strength, Keefe Bruyette recently upgraded the stock to Outperform.
  • Interactive Brokers (IBKR): The brokerage has expanded its offerings to include event contract support and new crypto tokens. Its stock performance, up 41.8% over the past year, reflects a broader surge in trading volumes that prediction markets are helping to amplify.

Tier 2: Platform Distributors

Retail-focused brokerages are increasingly integrating "event contracts" to attract and retain a younger, more engaged user base. These firms represent a more direct play on consumer adoption.

  • Robinhood Markets (HOOD): Analysts are explicitly factoring prediction markets into Robinhood's valuation. Needham recently raised its price target on the stock to $123, citing the acceleration of event contracts as a key driver for upgrading its 2026 and 2027 revenue estimates.
  • Charles Schwab (SCHW): While not a pure play, Schwab's management noted in its latest earnings call that trading activity from younger investors in options and adjacent products was a key driver of engagement. The company reported a 42% year-over-year increase in its Q2 2026 earnings per share.

Tier 3 & 4: Direct and Speculative Bets

For investors with a higher risk tolerance, some companies offer more direct, albeit more volatile, exposure to the prediction market thesis.

  • DraftKings (DKNG): The sports betting company is the only major public firm building its own proprietary prediction markets exchange, DKeX. TD Cowen highlighted this as a "significant opportunity," raising its price target to $35. However, this investment has weighed on the stock, which is down 34% year-to-date.
  • Thematic and Micro-Caps: The highest-risk tier includes thematic ETFs like ERShares XOVR, which has a direct investment in Kalshi, and speculative micro-caps such as Sports Entertainment Gaming Global (SEGG) and Prospect Prediction Markets (MKT).

The Investor Outlook

The primary bull case for the sector is the expansion of prediction markets beyond politics into areas like FDA drug trials, economic data, and sports, significantly increasing the total addressable market. However, a major bear case remains the threat of regulatory risk from agencies like the CFTC, which could halt growth with a single enforcement action. For now, the clearest risk-reward profiles appear to be in infrastructure plays like CME and distribution platforms like Robinhood, where the revenue impact is becoming increasingly visible.
