Pound Holds Steady as Dollar Stays Firm Ahead of Fed Minutes

The British pound held steady against a resilient U.S. dollar on Monday, with the currency pair trading near a two-week high as investors largely shrugged off last week's soft U.S. jobs data. Focus has shifted to upcoming Federal Reserve meeting minutes, which are widely expected to reinforce a hawkish monetary policy outlook.
As of 08:25 ET, the GBP/USD pair was down a marginal 0.03% at $1.3348. Elsewhere, the euro weakened more significantly, with EUR/USD falling 0.17% to $1.1417.
Dollar Resilience Dominates
The dollar's stability comes ahead of Wednesday's key Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) minutes. Last week's weaker-than-expected June non-farm payrolls report failed to dent the greenback significantly, with money markets still pricing in approximately 31 basis points of Federal Reserve tightening this year, according to Investing.com.
Analysts attribute this to a prevailing view that the central bank remains focused on inflation. "Short dollar positions need to be backed up by a strong story, which is simply not there at the moment," said Chris Turner, global head of markets at ING. Turner added that the Fed "is committed to restoring price stability after missing its target five years in a row."
Sterling's Domestic Outlook
AdSterling's recent strength has been supported by the unwinding of stale short positions rather than new domestic catalysts. However, analysts see potential headwinds from the UK's political landscape. Andy Burnham is expected to take office as Prime Minister on July 20, and ING notes that the frontrunner for Chancellor, Ed Miliband, faces severe fiscal constraints.
This backdrop, combined with ING's view that the Bank of England will not raise interest rates this year, could leave sterling "vulnerable to giving back recent gains once the political transition crystallises," the firm stated.
Week Ahead for Markets
The key event risk for currency markets this week is the release of the Fed's meeting minutes on Wednesday, which will be scrutinized for the central bank's latest thinking on inflation and interest rates. Before that, traders will monitor Monday's U.S. ISM services data for fresh signals on price pressures.
