Portugal's PSI Index Edges Lower on Sector Weakness Despite Positive Market Breadth

Portugal's benchmark stock index, the PSI, ended the trading week with a slight loss, pulled down by weakness in several key sectors. The index closed down 0.14% on Friday in a session that saw more individual companies gain than lose ground, according to data from the Lisbon exchange.
Sector Drags and Stock Movers
The decline was primarily driven by underperformance in the Consumer Goods, Telecoms, and Financials sectors. Among the most significant individual decliners was energy firm Galp Energia Nom (ELI:GALP), which saw its share price fall 2.29%.
Other notable laggards included postal service CTT Correios de Portugal SA (ELI:CTT), which dropped 1.37%, and renewable energy company EDP Renovaveis (ELI:EDPR), with a loss of 0.45%.
On the positive side, retailer Jeronimo Martins SGPS SA (ELI:JMT) was the session's top performer on the index, rising 1.22%. Gains were also recorded by Sonae SGPS SA (ELI:YSO) and Semapa (ELI:SEM), which added 0.50% and 0.48%, respectively.
AdBroader Market Picture
Despite the headline index's negative finish, market breadth was positive, indicating that the decline was not widespread. Data from the Lisbon Stock Exchange showed that 17 stocks advanced compared to only 8 that declined, with an additional 8 ending the session unchanged. This suggests the index's overall drop was influenced by the performance of its more heavily-weighted constituents.
In the wider financial markets, commodities showed a mixed picture. Brent crude oil futures posted a marginal gain, while U.S. crude and gold futures declined. The U.S. Dollar Index Futures, which measures the greenback against a basket of currencies, rose 0.20%.
