Background

Planet Labs PBC (NYSE:PL) has secured a significant contract with the German Federal Ministry of the Interior for satellite services, with a maximum value of €25 million over five years. The announcement on Tuesday prompted a 1.1% increase in the company's shares during after-hours trading.

Contract Details

Under the agreement, Germany becomes the first civil government in the world to acquire Planet’s dedicated Constellation Services. The contract was awarded following a tender process and will be coordinated by Germany's Federal Agency for Cartography and Geodesy (BKG).

Planet will provide a comprehensive suite of services, including:

  • Exclusive dedicated satellite tasking capabilities
  • High-resolution imagery and nationwide Planet Mosaics
  • Advanced geospatial analytics
  • A cloud-native, software-as-a-service (SaaS) platform hosted on European cloud infrastructure to comply with regional data privacy and security regulations.

The deal expands upon an existing relationship between Planet and the BKG that began in 2021. The services aim to create a unified data layer to support decision-making across numerous German civil authorities in areas such as urban planning, agriculture, and monitoring of forests and waterways.

This contract reinforces Planet's long-standing presence in Germany, where its European headquarters has been based in Berlin for over a decade. The company also noted plans to move into a new, larger facility in the city this fall, which will consolidate its satellite manufacturing, engineering, and data processing operations.

Financial Outlook

Despite the significant contract value, Planet Labs stated that the award does not change the company's previously issued financial guidance for the current fiscal year. Management last provided its outlook on September 3, 2026, according to the announcement.
