Pimco Acquires $4 Billion Stake in SpaceX AI Debt Package, Report Says

Pacific Investment Management Co. (Pimco) has purchased a $4 billion portion of a major financing deal for SpaceX designed to fund the expansion of its artificial intelligence operations, according to a Bloomberg report citing people familiar with the matter.
Details of the Financing
The transaction is part of a larger, roughly $40 billion equipment-financing package led by Apollo Global Management Inc. for Elon Musk’s SpaceX. The capital is intended to facilitate the purchase of high-demand graphics processing units (GPUs) from Nvidia Corp. and other related AI hardware.
Pimco's investment was reportedly in the A2 tranche of the debt package. This positions the asset manager in a mezzanine layer of the capital structure, situated between more junior and senior slices of debt. The debt is expected to be issued as 144a bonds, a type of privately placed security that can be traded among qualified institutional buyers.
AdMarket Context and AI Debt Appetite
Pimco has emerged as a significant capital provider for the infrastructure powering the AI boom, despite having previously cautioned about potential excesses in the sector. The firm was also an anchor investor in financing for an Oracle data center campus and backed a similar project for Meta Platforms.
This deal comes as some corners of the debt market have grown more cautious toward AI-related companies, weighing the industry's rapid, capital-intensive spending against its current profitability. The specific interest rate on the SpaceX debt was not disclosed, according to the report.
