OpenAI to Provide 100,000 Researchers with Free Access to Frontier AI Models

OpenAI announced on Wednesday a new initiative to provide 100,000 academic researchers with complimentary access to its most advanced artificial intelligence models. The program, called ChatGPT for Academic Researchers, aims to support scientific research and discovery by making the company's frontier technology more widely available within the academic community.

The initiative will roll out in phases, beginning with 10,000 researchers this summer and expanding to the full 100,000 by 2027, according to the company's statement. Participants will gain access to OpenAI's frontier models, including the newly announced GPT-5.6 Sol Pro.

Key features of the program include:

• Collaboration: Each selected researcher can invite up to four collaborators from their institution.
• Data Privacy: Workspaces will feature business-grade privacy and security protections.
• Model Training: User data will not be used to train OpenAI's models by default.

Access is already being provided at institutions such as the Institute for Advanced Study and École normale supérieure. The program is open to qualifying researchers at recognized, degree-granting universities with high levels of research activity.

A Strategic Investment in Science

This program is part of a broader commitment by OpenAI to invest more than $250 million through 2027 to support external scientific endeavors. This funding also supports other projects, including NextGenAI, a $50 million initiative for research institutions, and a partnership with the Department of Energy’s Genesis Mission to deploy AI in national laboratories.

The move highlights the increasing integration of AI in academic work. OpenAI reported that approximately 1.3 million people already use ChatGPT for advanced science and mathematics each week. The number of academic papers on the preprint server arXiv acknowledging ChatGPT's contribution rose from 14 in February to 100 in the first three weeks of July.

Access to Enhanced Capabilities

Researchers in the program will have access to the GPT-5.6 family of models, which demonstrate significant performance gains on scientific benchmarks. According to OpenAI, GPT-5.6 Sol achieves an 83% score on FrontierMath Tier 4, a test for research-level mathematical reasoning, compared to 72.5% for the prior GPT-5.5 model.

On the GeneBench Pro benchmark, which assesses complex biological data analysis, GPT-5.6 Sol Pro reportedly solves 31.5% of tasks. To support the effective use of these tools, OpenAI will also offer specialized training and access to experts familiar with research workflows.
