Background

Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) CEO Jensen Huang has declared the arrival of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), citing the recent launch of OpenAI's latest model, GPT-6 Astra, as a significant milestone. In a post on the social media platform X, Huang stated, “AGI has arrived,” while congratulating the OpenAI team.

A Milestone for AI Development

The declaration from the head of the world's leading AI chipmaker adds significant weight to the claims surrounding OpenAI's new model. OpenAI President Greg Brockman has also suggested that Astra could represent the start of the AGI era, though the term itself lacks a universally accepted definition in the tech and scientific communities.

OpenAI has described GPT-6 Astra as its “most intelligent and aligned system” to date. The company reported high performance scores on several advanced benchmarks, including:

  • 98% on FrontierMath Tier 4
  • 99.9% on ARC-AGI-3
  • 100% on ExploitBench

Nvidia's Central Role

Huang's comments also underscored the immense computational power required to achieve these advances, directly highlighting the central role of Nvidia's hardware. He noted that Astra was trained using more than 100,000 Nvidia Grace Blackwell NVLink72 systems.

Looking ahead, Huang indicated that the demand for high-performance computing is set to continue, adding that another 400,000 Nvidia GPUs were in the process of coming online. This signals a robust and growing pipeline for the company's core products as AI labs push the boundaries of model development.
