Nvidia Boosts Share Buyback Program by $150 Billion

Summary
The AI chipmaker announced a massive increase to its share repurchase authorization, bringing the total to $235 billion in a strong signal of confidence in its future growth and cash generation.
Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) announced a $150 billion increase to its share repurchase program, a historic move that underscores the company's financial strength amid the artificial intelligence boom. The increase brings the chipmaker's total available buyback authorization to a staggering $235 billion.
Shares of the company climbed 1.9% in Monday morning trading, outperforming a broader downturn in the technology sector following the news.
A Signal of Confidence
The massive authorization is being interpreted by investors as a strong signal of management's confidence in sustained growth and cash flow. In a statement, founder and CEO Jensen Huang attributed the move to the company's strong financial position, driven by a "once-in-a-generation platform shift to AI and accelerated computing."
"Our cash generation gives us the capacity to invest in the technologies that advance this transformation and return capital to shareholders," Huang said, as reported by Investing.com. "This authorization reflects our confidence in the long-term opportunity ahead." Analysts echoed this sentiment, with Mizuho TMT specialist Jordan Klein noting the move suggests Nvidia views its own stock as "a very attractive asset."
AdAccelerating Capital Returns
Nvidia's capital return strategy has accelerated dramatically, fueled by soaring demand for its AI-focused processors. The company plans to execute the $235 billion program through its 2028 fiscal year. Key details of the program's growth include:
- 2020-2021: Share repurchases were almost non-existent.
- Fiscal 2023: Buybacks grew to approximately $10 billion.
- Fiscal 2025: Repurchases surged to nearly $34 billion.
- Previous Authorization: Last year's $50 billion authorization was, at the time, considered a significant increase.
While share buybacks mechanically boost earnings per share by reducing the number of outstanding shares, an authorization of this magnitude primarily serves as a powerful statement about the company's internal financial outlook.
