Amprius Technologies Surges After Securing $75 Million US Defense Grant for Battery Production

Summary
Shares of the battery technology firm jumped after it was awarded up to $75 million from the Department of Defense to establish a U.S. manufacturing line for high-energy drone batteries.
Shares of Amprius Technologies (NYSE:AMPX) rose sharply on Monday after the company announced it secured a significant grant from the U.S. government to scale up domestic production of its advanced battery cells. The stock climbed 11% following the news of the award, which is aimed at strengthening the U.S. supply chain for critical defense components.
The Defense Contract
Amprius was awarded a grant of up to $75 million from the U.S. Department of Defense’s Industrial Base Analysis and Sustainment (IBAS) program. The funding will be used to retrofit an existing U.S.-based electric vehicle battery production line, currently operated by a major South Korean manufacturer, to produce Amprius's high-energy density cells.
The total cost for the conversion project is estimated at approximately $100 million, which includes in-kind investments from both Amprius and its South Korean partner. The initiative is designed to create a primary, high-volume source for battery cells that comply with the domestic sourcing requirements of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA).
Strategic Importance and Production Goals
AdThe primary objective of the grant is to establish a commercially viable U.S. manufacturing base for advanced batteries powering unmanned aerial systems, specifically Group 1, 2, and 3 drones. This move addresses a strategic need to onshore the production of critical technology for the U.S. military.
Once completed in early 2028, the retrofitted facility is expected to have an annual production capacity of 12 million Amprius cells. According to CEO Tom Stepien, the grant will help establish a primary source of domestic, NDAA-compliant battery production and accelerate the adoption of the company's high-performance pouch cells in a rapidly growing market.
Market Impact
The grant represents a significant vote of confidence from the Department of Defense in Amprius's technology and its role in the domestic industrial base. For investors, the funding de-risks a major capital expenditure and provides a clear path to scaled-up, U.S.-based manufacturing, expanding the company's existing network in China, South Korea, and the United States.
