Nikkei 225 Slides 1.69% as Transport, Pulp & Paper Stocks Lead Broad Sell-Off

Japan's Nikkei 225 index closed down 1.69% on Tuesday, marking a significant decline as broad-based selling pressure hit the Tokyo market. The losses were driven by weakness in several key sectors, reflecting negative investor sentiment.
Widespread Declines Hit Tokyo
The sell-off was broad, with losses in the Paper & Pulp, Transport, and Communication sectors leading the benchmark index lower, according to data from Investing.com. Market breadth confirmed the negative tone, as falling stocks on the Tokyo Stock Exchange outnumbered advancing ones by a substantial margin of 2,586 to 915, with 236 issues ending the session unchanged.
Among the session's worst-performing blue-chip stocks were:
- JTEKT Corp. (TYO:6473), which fell 8.68%
- Alps Alpine Co., Ltd (TYO:6770), down 8.29%
- Okuma Corp. (TYO:6103), which declined 7.99%
AdPockets of Strength Emerge
Despite the widespread downturn, a few companies bucked the trend. Notable gainers on the Nikkei 225 included retailer Nitori Holdings Co Ltd (TYO:9843), which rose 5.47%, and technology investment firm SoftBank Group Corp. (TYO:9984), which added 5.45%.
Volatility Eases Despite Sell-Off
In a notable development, the Nikkei Volatility index, a key gauge of expected market turbulence derived from options prices, plummeted 19.60% to 21.86. This steep drop brought the measure to a new six-month low, suggesting that despite the day's equity losses, investors are pricing in a period of lower volatility ahead. In currency markets, the Japanese yen strengthened, with the USD/JPY pair trading down 0.36% at 153.80.
