NFL Weekend Drives Prediction Market Volumes to Record Highs, Jefferies Reports

Prediction market trading volumes surged to record highs over the weekend, primarily driven by activity surrounding National Football League games. According to a Jefferies analysis, total volume across eight major exchanges topped $6.29 billion between Saturday and Sunday.
Record-Breaking Weekend Volume
The report from Jefferies detailed that total trading activity reached $3.17 billion on Saturday and $3.12 billion on Sunday. The surge highlights growing investor and trader interest in event-based contracts, which allow participants to speculate on the outcomes of real-world events.
DKeX, an exchange linked to DraftKings (NASDAQ:DKNG), saw its volume hit $137 million on Sunday, a new all-time daily high for the platform that surpassed its previous record by approximately $84 million. Meanwhile, Kalshi was a dominant force, contributing $4.89 billion in total volume over the two-day period.
NFL Contracts Fuel Market Growth
The opening weekend of the NFL season was a significant catalyst for the increased trading. The concentration of NFL-related activity, however, varied widely across exchanges on Sunday:
Ad- DKeX: Approximately 80% of volume was tied to NFL contracts.
- Kalshi: NFL-related trading accounted for 39% of its volume.
- Nadex: Only 2% of its volume was related to NFL events.
This activity translated into significant estimated revenue for the platforms. Based on contract volumes and fee schedules, Jefferies calculated that NFL trading on Sunday generated approximately $5.7 million for Kalshi and $1.1 million for DKeX.
A Look at the Competitive Landscape
The analysis underscores the scale of different platforms in the burgeoning prediction market space. Kalshi's NFL-related contract volume on Sunday was $963 million, significantly higher than DKeX's $110 million in NFL trades.
For DKeX, the NFL slate on Sunday generated an estimated $276,000 in maker fees. However, the report noted that not all of this figure represents new revenue for its parent company, DraftKings, as some liquidity may have been provided by affiliated market makers.
