MOEX Russia Index Slips 0.78% as Mining and Energy Stocks Decline

Summary
The Russian stock market closed lower on Monday, with the benchmark MOEX Index falling 0.78% due to widespread losses in the mining, oil and gas, and manufacturing sectors. The decline came as crude oil prices fell, while the Russian ruble remained stable.
Russian stocks finished Monday's trading session in negative territory, with the benchmark MOEX Russia Index declining as weakness in the country's key industrial sectors weighed on investor sentiment. The broad-based losses came amid a significant drop in global crude oil prices.
Market Performance
The MOEX Russia Index fell 0.78% by the close of trading in Moscow, according to exchange data. Market breadth was negative, with falling stocks outnumbering advancing ones by 129 to 115, while 11 issues ended the session unchanged.
Reflecting increased investor caution, the Russian Volatility Index (RVI), which measures the implied volatility of MOEX options, climbed 2.71% to 34.89. A rising RVI typically suggests that traders anticipate a wider range of price movements in the near future.
Sector Drags and Individual Movers
The day's downturn was primarily driven by losses across the Mining, Oil & Gas, and Manufacturing sectors. Several major companies were among the session's worst performers:
Ad- Diamond miner AK ALROSA PJSC (ALRS) fell 2.41%.
- Tech firm VK Company Ltd (VKCO) declined 2.35%, hitting an all-time low.
- Mining and metals giant GMK Noril’skiy Nikel’ PAO (GMKN) was down 2.15%.
Despite the overall market decline, some stocks posted notable gains, providing a measure of support. Among the top performers were Federal Hydro Generating Company RusHydro PJSC (HYDR), which rose 2.64%, and energy major Gazprom PJSC (GAZP), which added 1.31%.
Commodities and Currencies Context
The weakness in Russian equities coincided with a sharp drop in oil prices, a key driver for Russia's economy. Crude oil futures for November delivery fell 4.28% to $91.97 a barrel, while the international benchmark Brent contract saw a more modest decline of 0.11%.
In foreign exchange markets, the Russian ruble remained stable against major currencies. The USD/RUB and EUR/RUB pairs were reported as unchanged at 83.47 and 96.04, respectively, at the time of the market close.
