MOEX Russia Index Finishes Flat Despite Broad Market Declines

Russia's main stock market benchmark, the MOEX Russia Index, finished the trading session on Sunday completely flat, posting 0.00% change. However, the flat close of the headline index belied broader negative sentiment across the market, as a majority of individual stocks recorded losses.
Market Internals Show Weakness
Despite the unchanged index, the market breadth was decidedly negative. Data from the Moscow Stock Exchange showed that falling stocks significantly outnumbered advancing ones by a margin of 165 to 70, with 17 issues ending the day unchanged.
This divergence suggests that while gains in some heavily-weighted index components offset losses elsewhere, the wider market experienced a bearish session. Meanwhile, the Russian Volatility Index (RVI), which measures the implied volatility of MOEX options, was also unchanged at 37.83.
Key Stock Movers
A handful of major companies saw significant price movements. Oil giant Rosneft was a standout performer, while industrial and airline stocks lagged.
Ad- Top Gainer: Rosneft PJSC (ROSN) rose 3.01%.
- Top Losers: AFK Sistema PJSC (AFKS) fell 2.98%, United Company Rusal IPJSC (RUAL) declined 2.93%, and Aeroflot PJSC (AFLT) dropped 2.88%.
Currency and Commodity Markets
In the currency markets, the Russian ruble strengthened against major currencies. The USD/RUB pair fell 0.51% to 86.21, and the EUR/RUB pair declined 1.05% to 99.66.
Commodity prices were mixed. Brent crude oil futures for November delivery rose 0.35% to $95.85 a barrel, while WTI crude for October delivery edged down 0.09% to $91.22. Gold futures for December delivery saw a more significant drop, falling 1.38% to $4,477.20 a troy ounce.
