MOEX Russia Index Closes Modestly Higher, Led by Energy Sector

Summary
Russia's benchmark stock index, the MOEX, gained 0.22% on Wednesday, supported by strength in the oil and gas sector. However, the broader market showed weakness as declining stocks outnumbered advancers.
Russia's MOEX stock index edged higher to close Wednesday's session, gaining 0.22% as strength in key industrial sectors offset wider market declines. The advance was primarily led by gains in the Oil & Gas, Power, and Manufacturing industries, according to market data.
Sector and Stock Movers
Energy companies were among the day's top performers. TATNEFT (MCX:TATN) rose 1.89% and LUKOIL (MCX:LKOH) added 1.68%. The best-performing stock on the index was e-commerce firm OZON (MCX:OZON), which climbed 2.48%.
However, losses in other major stocks capped the index's gains. The session's biggest laggards included:
- AFK Sistema PJSC (MCX:AFKS): -2.72%
- Mobil’nye Telesistemy PJSC (MCX:MTSS): -2.52%
- GMK Noril’skiy Nikel’ PAO (MCX:GMKN): -1.67%
Market Internals and Volatility
AdDespite the positive close for the benchmark index, market breadth was negative, indicating that the rally was not broad-based. On the Moscow Stock Exchange, 138 stocks fell while only 104 advanced, with 13 remaining unchanged.
Meanwhile, a key measure of expected market turbulence, the Russian Volatility Index (RVI), declined significantly. The RVI fell 4.06% to 31.90, reaching a new three-month low. A lower RVI generally suggests decreasing investor anxiety about future price swings.
Commodities and Currency
In commodity markets, crude oil prices were mixed. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude for November delivery rose 1.07% to $90.34 a barrel, while the international benchmark Brent crude contract for December delivery slipped 0.09%.
Gold futures for December delivery saw a modest gain of 0.22%. In the foreign exchange market, the Russian ruble remained stable, with both the USD/RUB and EUR/RUB pairs closing unchanged, according to the provided data.
