MOEX Russia Index Closes Flat as Energy Gains Offset Broader Market Declines

Summary
Russia's main stock index finished Sunday's session unchanged, as a rally in heavyweight energy stocks like Rosneft masked weakness across the broader market, where declining stocks outnumbered advancers.
The MOEX Russia Index closed flat on Sunday, a reading that belies a session marked by broad-based declines across the Moscow Exchange. Gains in a few large-cap energy companies were just enough to offset losses in a wider number of stocks, resulting in a 0.00% change for the benchmark index.
Market Internals Reveal Weakness
Despite the flat headline number, market breadth was decidedly negative. According to data from the Moscow Stock Exchange, falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones by a margin of 133 to 99, while 18 issues ended the day unchanged.
The session saw a clear divergence in performance among key index components:
- Top Gainers: Energy giant Rosneft PJSC (MCX:ROSN) rose 0.94%. Other notable performers included utility company ROSSETI PJSC (MCX:FEES), which gained 0.61%, and Surgutneftegas PJSC Pref (MCX:SNGS_p), up 0.45%.
- Top Decliners: Leading the laggards was diamond producer AK ALROSA PJSC (MCX:ALRS), which fell 1.13%. Retailer Magnit PJSC (MCX:MGNT) shed 0.96%, and airline Aeroflot PJSC (MCX:AFLT) dropped 0.95%.
AdCommodities and Currencies Diverge
The mixed equity performance came as global energy prices retreated. Crude oil for November delivery fell 2.34% to $96.08 a barrel, while the international Brent crude contract declined 1.56% to $103.19 a barrel.
In currency markets, the Russian ruble strengthened slightly against major currencies. The USD/RUB pair traded down 0.11% to 84.42, and the EUR/RUB fell 0.27% to 96.72. Meanwhile, the Russian Volatility Index (RVI), a measure of market anxiety, was unchanged at 33.97.
