Micron Could Repurchase Over 40% of Its Shares by 2028, UBS Projects

Micron Technology (NASDAQ: MU) could repurchase more than 40% of its outstanding shares by the end of 2028, according to a new projection from UBS analysts. The investment firm anticipates the memory chip manufacturer will deploy substantial free cash flow for repurchases once current restrictions are lifted.
UBS Forecasts Major Buyback Program
In a research note, UBS laid out a scenario where Micron could significantly reduce its share count over the next several years. The firm's model suggests that if Micron allocates all of its free cash flow to buybacks after a restriction period ends, it could repurchase more than 40% of its shares by the end of calendar year 2028, based on the stock's current valuation.
The analysis is predicated on the company's ability to generate strong and sustained free cash flow, a key metric for funding such capital return programs. Micron manufactures memory and storage products essential for data centers, computing, and mobile devices.
Capital Return Restrictions to Expire
A critical factor in the UBS forecast is an existing limitation on Micron's ability to return cash to shareholders. According to the firm, the company is currently restricted from conducting share buybacks.
AdThis restriction is set to expire on December 9, 2026. After this date, Micron's management will regain full flexibility in its capital allocation strategy, potentially enabling the aggressive repurchase program outlined by UBS.
Implications for Investors
Large-scale share repurchase programs can be a significant driver of shareholder value. By reducing the number of shares outstanding, buybacks can boost a company's earnings per share (EPS), a key valuation metric.
Such a move would also signal strong confidence from Micron's management in the company's long-term growth prospects and a belief that its shares are undervalued. While the forecast represents a potential long-term catalyst, its realization depends on market conditions and the company's strategic decisions after 2026.
