Mexican Stocks Close Lower as Industrial and Consumer Shares Weigh on S&P/BMV IPC

Summary
Mexico's benchmark S&P/BMV IPC index fell 0.28% on Wednesday, dragged down by losses in heavyweight industrial and consumer stocks despite positive market breadth.
Mexico's benchmark stock index, the S&P/BMV IPC, closed lower on Wednesday, weighed down by declines in the industrial and consumer-focused sectors. The index fell by 0.28% to conclude the trading session, according to closing data from the Mexico Stock Exchange.
Sector Drags and Key Decliners
The pullback was primarily driven by weakness across the Industrials, Consumer Goods & Services, and Consumer Staples sectors. Several major companies saw notable declines, with cement giant Cemex SAB de CV emerging as one of the session's worst performers.
Meanwhile, shares in retailer Grupo Comercial Chedraui, SAB De CV fell to a three-year low. Key decliners for the day included:
- Cemex SAB de CV (CEMEXCPO): -3.26% to trade at 17.19
- Grupo Comercial Chedraui (CHDRAUIB): -2.09% to end at 84.00
- Gentera SAB de CV (GENTERA): -1.05% to close at 36.69
Pockets of Strength and Market Breadth
Despite the headline index's decline, overall market breadth on the Mexico Stock Exchange was positive. Data from the session showed that 138 stocks advanced compared to 105 that declined, with 16 remaining unchanged. This dynamic suggests that losses in a few heavily-weighted index components were the main driver of the S&P/BMV IPC's negative performance.
AdTop performers provided some bright spots in the market. Notable gainers included:
- Corporacion Inmobiliaria Vesta (VESTA): +1.79% to 57.89
- Qualitas Controladora (Q): +1.41% to 154.78
- Becle SA (CUERVO): +1.31% to 14.65
Currency and Commodity Markets
In foreign exchange markets, the Mexican peso was little changed against the U.S. dollar, with the USD/MXN pair ticking up 0.03% to 17.52. The broader US Dollar Index Futures, which measures the greenback against a basket of major currencies, rose 0.53%.
Commodity markets presented a mixed picture. Crude oil futures for November delivery rose 2.42% to hit $92.71 a barrel. In contrast, Gold futures for December delivery fell 1.23% to settle at $4,322.70 a troy ounce.
