Meta Rolls Out Free 'Facebook Verified' Badge to Confirm User Authenticity

Meta (NASDAQ:META) has announced the launch of Facebook Verified, a new, free badge designed to confirm that a profile is operated by a real person. The verification, which does not require a subscription, aims to bolster security and authenticity across the social network.
Verification Process
To receive the badge, users must complete a verification process using a video selfie. According to Meta, the platform's system then checks the video against the user's existing profile photos to confirm a match. The company stated that the process typically takes a few minutes to complete.
Eligibility for the new badge is subject to several conditions:
- Users must be 18 years or older.
- The account must be in good standing with Facebook's Community Standards.
- The profile must not show evidence of inauthentic behavior or be associated with fraud or deceptive practices.
The service is currently available for personal profiles only and is not being offered for Pages or accounts using ProMode.
AdStrategic Context and Rollout
This free authenticity badge is distinct from the company's paid Meta Verified subscription service, which offers a blue checkmark and other premium features for a monthly fee. The new Facebook Verified badge is positioned as a foundational trust and safety feature, intended to help users identify genuine accounts.
The badge will initially appear in key areas of the platform, including Marketplace, Dating, Groups, and on user profiles. Meta plans to expand its visibility to Feed posts over time. The rollout is being conducted in phases, starting in select markets with a global expansion planned for a later date.
Limitations and Investor Takeaway
Meta emphasized that the new badge is not an endorsement of a user or a guarantee of their trustworthiness. All users, verified or not, remain subject to the platform's Community Standards and Commerce Policies. For investors, the move signals Meta's continued focus on addressing platform integrity issues like scams and fake profiles, which can impact user engagement and advertiser confidence, particularly in commerce-focused sections like Marketplace.
