Background

Meta Platforms (META) announced Friday it is discontinuing a new artificial intelligence feature just days after its launch, following widespread criticism over privacy concerns regarding its use of public Instagram photos.

The tool, named Muse Image, was an image-generation model integrated into the Meta AI chatbot that allowed users to create and edit images, in part by referencing publicly available photos on Instagram.

Feature Pulled After Backlash

Meta launched the feature on Tuesday but quickly faced a backlash due to its automatic opt-in policy, which meant users' public content could be used by the tool by default. By Friday, the company reversed its decision.

"Our intent was to provide a useful creative tool and to give people control over whether their public content could be referenced in this way," Meta said in a statement. "We’ve heard the feedback that this feature missed the mark, so it’s no longer available."

Criticism from Hollywood Union

The move drew sharp criticism from prominent users and organizations. The actors' union SAG-AFTRA urged its members and the public on Thursday to opt out of the feature, calling the lack of explicit consent unacceptable.

"Anything other than a clear and conspicuous opt-in for these types of uses of Instagram users’ images is unacceptable," the union stated. Following Meta's reversal, a SAG-AFTRA spokesperson welcomed the decision, calling the discontinuance "the responsible thing to do."

Broader Implications for AI Data Usage

This rapid reversal highlights the increasing pressure on technology companies to be transparent about how user data is utilized for training and operating generative AI models. The incident underscores a strong public and institutional preference for explicit opt-in consent over opt-out systems, a key consideration for firms developing AI-powered products.

The episode serves as a cautionary tale for the industry, demonstrating the potential for significant reputational risk when user privacy expectations are not met, even when the data involved is publicly shared.
