McLaren Announces £500 Million UK Investment, Confirms Performance SUV

Summary
British supercar maker McLaren Automotive will invest £500 million to expand its UK operations, backed by its Abu Dhabi-based shareholder L’IMAD. The plan includes developing a new performance SUV and is expected to create over 1,000 jobs.
McLaren Automotive will invest £500 million to expand its manufacturing, engineering, and operational footprint in the United Kingdom, the British supercar maker announced Tuesday. The strategic investment is backed by L’IMAD, a sovereign investor of the Government of Abu Dhabi and McLaren's shareholder, to position the company for its next phase of growth.
Strategic Expansion and New Models
The investment will fund a significant expansion of McLaren's production capabilities, including the development of its next generation of vehicles. As part of the plan, the company officially confirmed it will produce a new performance SUV, a significant move for the brand traditionally focused on two-seat supercars.
Key initiatives funded by the investment include:
- Construction of a new vehicle assembly facility in the UK.
- Bringing future powertrain development and production in-house for the first time.
- Introducing two new proprietary engines and transmissions as part of its ongoing hybrid strategy.
This move toward in-house powertrain manufacturing marks a major strategic shift, giving McLaren greater control over the technology central to its high-performance vehicles.
Economic Impact and Job Creation
AdThe programme is expected to have a substantial impact on the UK automotive sector, creating at least 1,000 direct and indirect jobs across McLaren’s UK operations by 2032. The company projects its UK manufacturing workforce will double, and up to 3,000 additional jobs could be created across its supply chain.
Investment will boost activity at existing sites, including the McLaren Production Centre in Woking and the McLaren Composites Technology Centre in South Yorkshire, which specializes in carbon-fibre manufacturing. The company also recently opened a design centre in Bicester and a vehicle development facility in the Midlands.
Shareholder and Executive Commentary
Jassem Al Zaabi, Managing Director and Group CEO of L’IMAD, stated that the investor has worked with McLaren's management over the past 20 months to refine its strategy. "This investment reflects our confidence in its potential and our commitment to backing the business through its next chapter," Al Zaabi said.
Nick Collins, CEO of McLaren Group Holdings and McLaren Automotive, added that the capital injection provides the company with a platform for growth. "This investment gives us the platform to grow, develop and build on what makes us distinctive, while investing in the people, technologies and products that will keep us competitive for decades to come," Collins said.
UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham praised the decision, stating, "McLaren Automotive is doubling down on Britain, keeping the design, the engineering and the building of every future car here, and taking on a thousand more people to do it."
