MBX Biosciences Shares Fall After CEO, CFO Leadership Overhaul

Shares of MBX Biosciences Inc. (NASDAQ:MBX) fell sharply in extended trading on Monday following the announcement of a significant overhaul in its executive leadership. The stock dropped 8.3% in the after-hours session after the company revealed a new Chief Executive Officer and made its interim Chief Financial Officer permanent.
Executive Shake-Up
MBX Biosciences announced that Steve Hoerter, the current Executive Chairman of the Board, has been appointed Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, effective immediately. He succeeds Kent Hawryluk, who has stepped down from his roles as President, CEO, and board member.
Alongside the change at the top, the company appointed John Smither as its permanent Chief Financial Officer. Smither had been serving as the Interim CFO since March 2026. Such abrupt changes in C-suite leadership can create uncertainty among investors, often leading to short-term stock price volatility.
New Leadership Profile
Hoerter is a familiar figure at the company, having joined the MBX Board of Directors in April 2025 and becoming Executive Chairman in November 2025. His prior experience includes serving as President and CEO of Deciphera Pharmaceuticals, where he guided the firm's transition to a commercial-stage entity before its acquisition by Ono Pharmaceutical in 2024.
AdSmither brings more than two decades of financial leadership in the biopharmaceutical sector. His previous roles include CFO at Arcutis Biotherapeutics, where he managed the company's IPO and subsequent financings, as well as at Sienna Biopharmaceutics and Kythera Biopharmaceuticals.
Clinical Pipeline Unchanged
Despite the management transition, MBX Biosciences stated that it remains on track to achieve three key clinical milestones in the second half of 2026. The company reaffirmed its plans for:
- The initiation of a Phase 3 trial of canvuparatide for chronic hypoparathyroidism.
- The nomination of a GLP-1/GIP/GCGR triple agonist candidate for obesity.
- The release of 12-week multiple ascending dose data from its MBX 4291 program.
The company's focus remains on developing precision peptide therapies for endocrine and metabolic disorders through its proprietary technology platform.
