Background

Malaysian equities are experiencing strong demand from investors, placing the country as a solid middle-tier preference within Southeast Asia, according to a new report from Citi. The findings, based on recent investor meetings in Hong Kong, noted that while Singapore is the consensus overweight choice in the region, Malaysia and Thailand are ranked favorably, ahead of a more cautious outlook for Indonesia.

Macro Outlook Supports Sentiment

Investors largely agree that Malaysia's macroeconomic fundamentals are a key attraction, according to Citi. The bank's economist forecasts the country's GDP will grow by 4.6% in 2026, a slight moderation from 5.2% in 2025. This growth is expected to be driven by tailwinds from artificial intelligence-related demand in the electronics and semiconductor sectors, as well as the realization of previously approved investments.

While a gradual slowdown is anticipated in the second and third quarters due to the impact of Middle East tensions, inflation is expected to remain stable. Both headline and core inflation are projected to stay near 2%, providing a stable economic backdrop.

Political Developments and Reforms in Focus

Political developments remain a key topic of discussion for investors. Although general elections are not scheduled until 2028, Citi noted that recent headlines have raised the possibility of an early election. The report also highlighted that the upcoming Negeri Sembilan state election in August will be a closely watched event.

Market-focused initiatives have been well-received. Investors provided positive feedback on Malaysia's value-up program, which aims to improve corporate value through clearer targets and better communication. The potential expansion of the benchmark KLCI index to 50 constituents was also viewed favorably.

Key Sectors Drawing Attention

Sector-specific interest is concentrated in areas poised for growth. According to Citi, investors are showing particular enthusiasm for:

  • Data center-related construction and power sectors
  • Healthcare
  • Consumer discretionary
  • Technology
  • Banking

Specific companies mentioned as points of interest during the meetings included construction firm Gamuda, retailer 99SpeedMart, and healthcare providers Sunway Medical Centre (SunMed) and KPJ Healthcare.
