Macron Calls 'Go-It-Alone' European Defense Strategies an 'Absurdity'

French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday criticized European nations for pursuing individual defense strategies, calling the approach an "absurdity" as governments ramp up military spending in response to geopolitical threats. The comments, reported by Reuters, were made during his annual address to the French armed forces on the eve of Bastille Day.
A Warning Against Fragmentation
Macron argued that nationalistic defense policies ultimately undermine European security and create future delays. "At a time when Europe is rearming, to think that the course of history lies in each of us separately accumulating capabilities is an absurdity," he stated.
He stressed the need for a unified approach over fragmented national interests. "Every time we create fragmentation, we may feel good in the moment, but we are creating the delays of tomorrow," Macron said, adding, "Patriotism, yes; nationalism, never."
Industrial and Geopolitical Context
The president's speech follows the recent collapse of a major Franco-German defense initiative, the Future Combat Air System (FCAS). The next-generation fighter jet project stalled after months of deadlock between France’s Dassault Aviation and Germany's representative, Airbus, highlighting the industrial rivalries that can challenge collective rearmament.
AdMacron said he "deeply regretted" the project's failure. His remarks also come amid French concerns that Germany's rapidly increasing military budget could create new competition in a sector of traditional French strength. He pointed to the Franco-German tank maker KNDS as a model for successful cross-border collaboration.
Call to Accelerate Production
While noting that France was on track to double its defense budget over a decade, Macron issued a direct challenge to the country's arms industry. He warned manufacturers that they must increase the speed and scale of production to meet surging demand both domestically and abroad.
Macron identified several key areas where he believes French production is not fast or large enough:
- Drones
- Air defense systems
- Missiles
- Ammunition
