Background

Shares of LightPath Technologies (NASDAQ: LPTH) jumped after the company announced it secured an $11 million follow-on purchase order for its infrared cameras. The order, from an unnamed global technology customer, is for use in counter-unmanned aircraft systems (counter-UAS).

Order Details and Strategic Shift

The company confirmed in a press release on Tuesday that this is a repeat purchase from a significant customer, signaling continued demand for its technology in the defense and public safety sectors. The order also includes a plan to transition the camera optics from Germanium-based materials to LightPath’s proprietary BlackDiamond materials over the course of the program.

This shift is a key strategic development for LightPath. CEO Sam Rubin noted that the move to BlackDiamond provides a domestically produced alternative to Germanium, which faces tightening export restrictions. The transition supports the company's strategy of focusing on higher-value, vertically integrated products.

Market Impact and Outlook

Following the announcement, LightPath's stock rose by 9% in trading. The order reinforces the company's position in the defense technology supply chain and its relationship with a key client.

"This order reflects the deepening relationship with one of our most significant customers and the expanding role of our infrared camera systems in public safety applications, where reliability and performance are mission-critical," said CEO Sam Rubin. He added that the shift toward integrated camera solutions is expected to result in "higher revenue and gross margins."
