Kalshi Captures 76% of Surging NFL Prediction Market Volume, Needham Reports

Prediction market volume for sports and parlays surged to $14.6 billion during the first week of the NFL season, with the exchange Kalshi capturing a commanding 76% market share, according to new analysis from Needham.
Explosive Trading Activity
The trading volume in the season's opening week matched the total volume recorded during the first 14 weeks of the previous NFL season, underscoring significant growth in the sector. The activity was also 29% higher than the peak volumes seen during the World Cup, according to the firm's analysis of data from eight exchanges.
Needham reported that it is now tracking prediction markets broadly, with data normalized for an NFL week running from Tuesday to Monday. The firm estimated the consumer equivalent handle at $2.1 billion, which it suggests represents approximately 60% penetration of the prediction market's serviceable addressable market.
Market Share Breakdown
While Kalshi led with 76% of total volume, its market share adjusted to 67% when measured by consumer equivalent handle, a difference attributed to its higher penetration of parlay bets. Other key players in the market include:
Ad- Polymarket: Increased its share from 12% of total volume to 18% of the consumer handle.
- DKeX: Remained steady at approximately 3% share on both metrics.
Analyst Caveats
Needham noted that focusing solely on exchange volumes might overstate the market share of Kalshi and Polymarket, as other operators feed volume into their exchanges. Conversely, the analysis may understate the position of DraftKings (NASDAQ:DKNG), which currently feeds its volume into multiple exchanges.
The firm stated it expects DraftKings to eventually concentrate its volume onto its own proprietary exchange. This potential shift could alter the competitive landscape in the future.
